Written by Administrator on 24 May 2018

The recent Commission on Higher Education’s 24th Anniversary declared Region 1 as the Best Booth in its Higher Education Trade Fair 2018 that lasted from May 15-18 at the CHED Central Office Atrium. The booth showcased products from the six SUCs in the region: Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), University of Northern Philippines (UNP), Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC), North Luzon Polytechnic State College (NLPSC), Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU), and Pangasinan State University (PSU).

Themed “Access to Higher Education: Equalizing Opportunities, Building a Brighter Future”, the Higher Education Trade Fair 2018 is a showcase of products and technologies developed, invented, or created by SUCs and LUCs. The trade fair also serves as an avenue to help promote the flagship projects of SUCs and LUCs contributory to the socio-economic and technological advancement of the country.

With such objectives, trade fair participants and exhibitors alike were able see products and technologies, listen to new knowledge and working practices in the propagation of crops, and buy seedlings and decorations they may take home. In Region 1, MMSU showcased innovations in bamboo products with its bamboo-based products such as phone holders, picture frame, tissue holders, laptop holders, display cars, and others made of Kawayan. As a product of its one-node technology and the pole-per-year (PoPeYe) technology in bamboo propagation, these products display the ingenuity and creativity of the Ilocano mind in making money out of its natural riches. Other products showcased by the University include its camangeg-based food products such as pacensia, cookies, and lenggua, the Sukang Iloco product of the sugarcane development project, grafted mangoes, and onions and garlic as a part of its commitment in enhancing agricultural practices through S&T interventions. From Ilocos Sur, UNP, ISPSC, and the NLPSC displayed their intricate Vigan woven cloth and jar products, food products such as oyster mushroom pickles, native mangoes, muscovado, calamay, balikutsa, chichacorn and chichapop, and honey. From La Union, the DMMMSU displayed their silk products from sericulture such as Barong Tagalog made of silk, shawls, and towels, and pure wild and processed honey. And from Pangasinan, PSU displayed its processed products through its Food Innovation Center (FIC). From this multitude of products, the booth exhibits the harmony of production to processing and product development, of equal opportunities in practice and conception for nation building.

Other SUCs from different regions showcased their agricultural projects and value-adding initiatives through their processed products. With their active FICs, processed food products range from crops turned into candies, teas, pickles, and other sweets, dried and smoked fish products, chevon food products, fruit wines, and a lot more.

The Commission also set a line-up of activities in its week-long anniversary celebration. Included in its line-up are GAD-centred activities such as film showing, seminars and lectures, and consultation. CHED Got Talent 2018 is also another highlight of the celebration where CHED Region 1 won the first place.
