Ginger Dispersal expands to Burgos and Batac

Written by Administrator on 16 August 2018

A total of 448 kilograms of ginger were distributed to 13 farmer-beneficiaries in Burgos and Batac this July to August, 2018 for the Ginger Dispersal Project of the Extension Directorate.

Of the said number, 7 farmer-beneficiaries from barangays Agaga, Tanap, and Nagsurot availed a total of 175 kilograms of ginger last July 13, 2018. The remaining 273 kilograms were availed by 6 farmer-beneficiaries of Sitio Lubbot of Brgy. San Pedro in the City of Batac last August 3, 2018.

The Ginger Dispersal Project is an expansion of the Extension Directorate’s Seedstock Dispersal Project (SDP). With the influx of the STBF on Organic-based Ginger Production and the successful implementation of the SDP in its rice and corn dispersals, ginger was one of the crops accommodated for dispersal along with sugarcane, garlic, mungbean, the tissue-cultured banana, and peanut. The SDP is a strategic banner extension program of the Extension Directorate to disseminate mature technologies to the farmers that includes the use of low-cost and environment-friendly technologies such as the use of improved seedstocks, organic fertilizer, pest management strategies, and others. To recall, the municipalities of Burgos, Nueva Era, and Pagudpud were the recipients of the ginger dispersal last year.

Dr. Maura Luisa Gabriel of the College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development served as the speaker for the training on ginger production. Topics discussed include varietal selection, land preparation, planting, fertilizer management, pest management, harvesting, and post-harvest management. IEC materials were also distributed as a ready reference to the topics discussed. Ms. Bella Gervacio, Chief of the Training and Continuing Education (TCE) Section of the Office, discussed the implementation scheme of the ginger dispersal project.

Ginger, or “laya” in Ilokano, is a natural spice in Ilokano dishes also packed with therapeutic and medicinal properties. With the favourable climatic condition of Ilocos Norte and the increasing demand for ginger in the province, more and more farmers are becoming interested in planting the commodity. Hence, through the project, more and more farmers are being aided because of the continuous dissemination of the recommended technologies for ginger.
