Extension, CASAT conducts training on Tilapia Production

Written by Administrator on 04 October 2018

Thirty-two participants packed the two-day enhancement training on tilapia production at the Audio-Visual Room of the University Training Center this September 26-27, 2018.

Collaboratively spearheaded by the Extension Directorate and the College of Aquatics Sciences and Applied Technology (CASAT), the training aims to update tilapia growers with the recent and science-based production technologies in tilapia production. Research and Extension staff, interested MMSU personnel, farmer-partners from the different municipalities, and students of the college enjoined their interest to start on tilapia production.

Researchers and faculty from the college served as resource speakers for the activity. Topics include the Overview of Aquaculture by Ms. Marjorie Ramos; Site and Species Selection for Aquaculture by Mr. Jeric Balauro; Brood Stock Management and Fingerlings Production by Ms. Marjorie Ramos; Culture and Management by Ms. Honnie Joy Balauro; Culture of Natural Foods and Feeding by Mr. Reynaldo Baldo; Harvest and Post-harvest Management by Prof. Carmencita Saladino; Sexing and Stocking of Tilapia by Mr Jeric Balauro; and Water Quality Management and Monitoring by Mr. Reynaldo Baldo.

At the end of the two-day training, the participants are expected to adopt the various technologies in tilapia production, apply the various principles in monitoring the growth of tilapia, efficiently manage the water quality suitable for tilapia, and carry out acceptable practice in the harvest and post-harvest phases of tilapia production. The first day of the training was dedicated for the lectures while the second day was packed with another set of lecture and an open forum. A hands-on activity on sexing and stocking and water monitoring was also incorporated for the day.

Tilapia is a popular fish for aquaculture given its versatility and tolerance of a variety of aquaculture environments. A fast growing fish species, it has a great demand to fish farmers and consumers, hence, profitable business venture in the locality.

To recall, the Extension Directorate maintains four water impoundment areas as demonstration projects for the feasibility of growing tilapia on water impoundments and concrete ponds. With the need to enhance the knowledge of the extension workers manning the project given the impacts of climate change, rising cost of needed inputs, and increasing demand by internal and external stakeholders, the training was spearheaded in part of the aim of transferring the technology to interested growers

In the end, as a way of furthering aquaculture in the province, the University will answer the need of outside clients for further trainings and provision of technical assistance in the establishment and maintenance of the partner-growers’ ponds.
