Peanut growers embrace S&T interventions

Written by Administrator on 15 April 2019

Positive feedbacks beef the monitoring activities of the STCBF project in its continuing diffusion of climate resilient technologies.

Peanut growers of Zanjera Salpad-Baldio Cortez Irrigators Association of Brgy. Estancia, Piddig and Zanjera San Juan Pambansang Mannalon, Magbabaul, Mag-uuma, Magsasaka ng Pilipinas, Inc. in Vintar commend the technologies disseminated for its promising effect in their 15-hectare community farm planted with peanut.

Technologies on peanut production promoted by the project include the use of recommended peanut varieties, 14-14-14 basal application, NitroPlus as seed inoculant, and the use of Carrageenan as plant growth regulator at 9 liters per hectare. Ilocos Red (NSIC Pn 12) was utilized in the project being one of the recommended varieties in the province and its inherent preference by the farmers for its characteristics such as medium-maturing with medium-seeded pods. This variety yields an average of 2.4 t/ha during the dry season and 1.93 t/ha during wet.

Current beneficiaries of the project are Zanjera farmer organizations interested in adopting S&T technologies to help them mitigate impacts of drought in their localities. Peanuts were planted by the farmers this season after their rice and corn production to ensure healthy rotation of crops in their farms. IEC materials on the use of these climate-resilient technologies are also available in the Extension Directorate, ready for distribution, to keep them reminded on how to utilize them.

Encouraging observations on their use of NitroPlus and CPGR include larger bean pods and seeds, more pegs, and greener and robust leaves. “Pods are also relatively heavier than those not applied with the interventions”, Mr. Belarde Aceret, the President of Zanjera San Juan, said. These observations were enumerated since this is their first time to see much changes in their crops after years of no application of intervention to improve their production. These were also the obvious differences observed by the farmers who used the interventions and those did not use any. Hence, the growers are expectant of a high yield this cropping season.

It is then hoped that these farmers who have tried and tested the effectiveness of these technologies fully adopt the interventions so they may continuously adapt their farm activities to climate variability. Also, their adoption and utilization of these technologies can also benefit the other community members as they continue to demonstrate the effectiveness of these environment-friendly interventions.

These interventions are made available to the farmer organizations through the DOST-PCAARRD project on Sustaining Crop Productivity in Climate Vulnerable Areas in Ilocos Norte through Science and Technology Community-based Farm on Climate Resilient Technologies in collaboration with MMSU, ILAARRDEC, and Ilocos Norte LGUs with Dr. Dionisio S. Bucao as the Project Leader.
