MMSU-PT Continues to Implement CBR Program
Written by Administrator on 18 July 2019
As part of the MMSU’s initiative to help persons with disabilities, the MMSU-College of Health Sciences thru its Physical Therapy (CHS-PT) Department continues to implement the Community-Based Rehabilitation Program (CBR).
The CBR was first initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO) following the Declaration of Alma-Ata in 1978 in an effort to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families; meet their basic needs; and ensure their inclusion and participation. In the country, CBR is an identified action by the Department of Health, along with strengthening and expansion of rehabilitation, habilitation, and assistive technology, as reflected in the Action Framework for the Health and Wellness Program of Persons with Disabilities is adapted from the three major objectives of the WHO Global Disability Action Plan 2014-2021.
Having observed the increasing number of persons with disabilities (PWDs) and Children with Disabilities (CWDs) in Ilocos Norte, the PT Department through the University PT and Rehabilitation Center (UPTRC) focused its own community-oriented program by providing rehabilitation services to indigent-beneficiaries. Recently, it entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Municipality of San Nicolas on the implementation of the program in their locality.
The satellite clinic, located at the San Nicolas Municipal Health Office (MHO) building, allows easy access of patients in need of physical therapy services and rehabilitation, as well as physiatrist check-ups. This also allows the patient to access other forms of medical and health-related services such as pharmaceutical care and immunization.
Staff of the CBR satellite clinic include the faculty of the department and the PT interns of the Department of Physical Therapy. Two (2) volunteer PTs under the MHO of San Nicolas also participates in the operations of the clinic.
To date, the satellite clinic catered to 51 patients with various rehabilitation conditions during its two years of operation. It implements diagnosis and treatment of rehabilitation cases such as stroke and fractures, among others. It is open for service from 8:00am-12:00nn and 1:00pm-5:00pm, Mondays to Fridays.
