Farmers eye glutinous corn opportunity
Written by Administrator on 27 November 2020
Members of Daquioag Banuar Farmers Association of Marcos, Ilocos Norte including interested MMSU employees trained last November 24 at the MMSU Function Hall for the Pre-dispersal Training for Glutinous Corn Production.
This Pre-dispersal Training is a response of the University to the intent forwarded by said farmer association to be beneficiaries of the Seedstock Dispersal Project of the Extension Directorate. During the training, the farmers were trained on the recommended Glutinous Corn Production Technology through Dr. Sosima Demandante (CAFSD/Chief of the Technology Demonstration Section of the Extension Directorate) and were informed on the Mechanics of Implementation of the SDP through Ms. Bella Gervacio, Chief of the Training and Continuing Education (TCE) section of the Directorate.
The MMSU Glutinous Corn-1 being dispersed and promoted by the University because of its added opportunity through cornick processing. It is an open-pollinated glutinous corn developed by MMSU researchers with potential yield of 5.61 tons per hectare. As green corn, it can already be harvested from 60-70 days; and for grain, it can already be harvested from 90-100 days after planting.
Glutinous corn is usually planted from May to June for the wet season and October to March for the dry season. With the farmers planting the corn seed this early December, harvests and profits can already be seen after two to three months for boiled corn snack and three to four months after, ready for drying and processing as cornick during the summer season where tourists in the province are at peak.
The production technology highly emphasized the use of environment-friendly interventions and technologies such as the use of Bio-N as seed inoculant, use of organic fertilizer and balanced fertilization with inorganic fertilizer, use of recommended farming practices, and the use of trichogramma to control corn borers.
Interested MMSU employees were also accommodated through the MMSU Plant-Liners: A Rice-Corn Dispersal Project for MMSU Employees and Students. In the previous years, Daquioag Banuar Farmers Association was also a recipient of the MMSU-PCAARRD-ILAARRDEC-PGIN-Ilocos Norte LGUs Sustaining Crop Productivity in Climate Vulnerable Areas in Ilocos Norte through Science and Technology Community-based Farm (STCBF) on Climate Resilient Technologies.
A bunch of IEC materials were also provided to the beneficiaries to promote MMSU-developed and fine-tuned information and technologies such as Napasayaat a Wagas ti Panagmula iti Mais and Agaramidtayo iti Cornick to highlight the many opportunities in corn production and processing.
