Glocal malunggay snacks available at MMSU

Malunggay (Moringa oleifera), or marunggay in Ilokano, is sure to have its own space in the heart and taste buds of the Ilokanoes. And in this time of the pandemic where the need for good, healthy, and sustainable food is of immense importance, the following delectable snacks will surely keep the picky children into eating malunggay-based products.

Moringa cupcakes. Bring to the table these wonderful cupcakes and watch the children and the old enjoy a healthy and sumptuous snack. This sweet delight is of acceptable sweetness that makes you want to bite more as it melts in the mouth. It is soft and chewy and will surely make you crave for more.

Moringa craklets. This delicious snack is the upgraded ‘gipang’ of the North. Gipang is a crisp fried dough, now matched and fortified with nutrients from malunggay. Cracklets, looking like the local gipang with green-back glories, offer a not-so-sweet start but will leave a trace of sweetness that will make one eat a whole pack. It can be eaten as it is to sweeten a boring afternoon or wake up a lonely mouth, and it can be paired with sauces like tomato salsa, mayonnaise, catsup, or any favourite dip.

Moringa cookies. Looking like a smooth white stone with patches of green and black, this snack will surely get you eating a whole pack because of its delectable sweetness and smooth texture. A size fit for two bites, these malunggay-fortified cookies will surely get the kids wanting more every day.

 Moringa meatballs. The best pair of hot rice and dinengdeng, the malunggay meatballs offer a new taste to enjoy malunggay as a snack and as a meat-veggie meal. Its perfect combination of saltiness and flavourful meat can make one crave for more. This can be eaten as it is or mixed with any favourite dip.

Moringa pickles. Packed in a sophisticated-looking jar in combination with carrots, sugar, garlic, pepper, and Ilocos vinegar, this moringa pickles juices up a meal with its sweet-sour taste perfect in hot rice. A jar of this new delicacy is enough to make one ask for more rice or eat again for the second time.

All these delicious snacks are available at the MMSU Social Innovation and Partnership (SIP) Hub stationed at the Science and Technology (S&T) Park Building 1. These products will be featured for the whole month of January. And while some may linger for the seafood miki served in the house, trying these new and delectable snacks will surely give the feeling of being local while being excited to becoming global.
