In its drive to promote sustainable farming and empower local producers, Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) Extension and Research Directorate held a Field Day on Hybrid Off-Season Tomato Production Technology on October 23, 2025, in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte.

The event gathered around 100 participants from nine local government units (LGUs) and 17 farmers’ associations, showcasing MMSU’s hybrid tomato variety designed to thrive even during the wet season. Highlights included a farm walk, field observation, and an open forum with MMSU experts Dr. Alecsis Villarin, Jonathan Ramos, and Jerold Labii, who addressed farmers’ concerns on tomato diseases and production challenges.

Participants received information materials on hybrid tomato production and pest management to encourage adoption of science-based practices. Partner-implementers, including the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN), participating LGUs, and farmer organizations, were recognized with Certificates of Appreciation, while attendees enjoyed raffles and product exhibits featuring local produce. They lauded the initiative of the university for bridging traditional and modern farming techniques.

Dr. Marlowe Aquino, MMSU Extension Director, emphasized the importance of partnership and compassion in extension work, noting that farmers are at the heart of MMSU’s mission.

“This technology demonstration reflects the heart of MMSU’s extension services and our collaboration with other agencies. Our battle cry is ‘One call away’, you can always reach us”, Director Aquino added.

Representing MMSU President Virgilio Julius Manzano Jr., Dr. Aquino expressed gratitude to all partners, recognizing the dedication of the farmers to work together with the university for production, profit, and progress.

The field day reaffirmed MMSU’s commitment to bringing science closer to communities and fostering resilient, productive agriculture in Ilocos Norte.

MMSU is actively promoting off-season tomato production by developing and showcasing resilient hybrid varieties like Hybrid 1 (NSIC Tm10) and Hybrid 3 (NSIC Tm11). This is supported through collaborations with the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte, providing farmers with technical expertise, training, and input like fertilizers and mulches to ensure a steady supply even during the wet season. The university also operates technology demonstration farms and training programs to help farmers adopt these sustainable agricultural practices.
