Paving way for the utilization of the University’s research and development initiatives, MMSU and BauerTek Corp ties up to upscale the production and processing of selected herbal plants.

This Monday, February 21, the University welcomed BauerTek Corp headed by Dr. Richard Nixon Gomez in a meeting with interested malunggay growers in the province for the production and processing of malunggay. After the meeting, MMSU President, Dr. Shirley C. Agrupis, led the visit in the Malunggay Nursery in Lubbot established through the DA-funded project, Massive Moringa Seedlings Production, with the Malunggay Team Leader, Dr. Dionisio S. Bucao.

The meeting is an initial step for the project, Accelerating Moringa Commercialization through Academe-Community-Industry Partnerships with funding support from the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR). The project will be instrumental in establishing in-campus malunggay plantations and off-campus production areas through partnership with farmer cooperatives and organizations to partner local government units (LGUs) to include Piddig, Dingras, City of Batac, Paoay, Currimao, Solsona, and Badoc, and many others.

To fully upscale and industrialize the booming malunggay industry in the Ilocos, the University will also lead in the establishment of key processing facilities for herbal plants through the project, Upgrading and Expansion of the Moringa Processing Facilities into Herbal Research for Development (R4D) Processing Facility in the MMSU Lubbot Experimental Farm, with funding support from the DA-BAR.

Through these projects, the University shall bolster the malunggay industry in the province with its proposed Model Farm and Processing Facility set to produce malunggay products that conform to safety, quality, and market standards.

“This academe-community-industry partnership is our strategic approach to utilize and commercialize research-generated information and technologies of the University while we continue to empower our communities through technology and livelihood”, President Shirley Agrupis, expressed.

The partnership will also explore pharmaceutical applications of indigenous food plants (IFPs) and other herbal plants in the Ilocos such as makahiya and lagundi, turmeric, and garlic, especially the black garlic and the eventual isolation and production of S-allyl L-cysteine (SAC). For this, the group also visited the Tuklas Lunas Development Center (TLDC) of the University with its studies and progresses on the potentials of IFPs and other local herbal plants.

BauerTek Corp is a Filipino-owned pharmaceutical firm based in Sitio Kabilang Bakood, Sta. Rita in Guiguinto, Bulacan. It is a production, research, and development pharmaceutical facility for all-natural herbal supplements, standing in its company motto, Imbensiyong Pinoy, Gawang Pinoy.

BauerTek partners with state Universities and colleges (SUCs), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) to utilize expertise from the academe and the government’s science and technology experts. With such strong partnerships, partner LGUs generate livelihood to community members through production of high value crops.

To date, MMSU is the third SUC partner of the firm, along with the Isabela State University (ISU) and the Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST).
