MMSU leads Region 1 SUCS in national exhibit

As the leading institution of the North, the Mariano Marcos State University leads five (5) other state universities and colleges (SUCs) in Region 1 in the national SUC Fair 2022 hosted by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

Formally opened today, June 28, at the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) Music Hall, the exhibit champions innovation and resilience through research-generated products and technologies from regional niche projects. The exhibit focuses on the theme, Promoting Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Culture, and Arts for National Development and Global Competitiveness, and will be open until July 1, 2022.

Joining from Region 1 are the University of Northern Philippines (UNP), Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC), and North Luzon Philippines State College (NLPSC) in Ilocos Sur, the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) in La Union, and Pangasinan State University (PSU) in Pangasinan.

For the four-day exhibit and trade fair, the Region 1 booth showcases research-generated products and technologies including the Black Garlic (considered the Black Diamond of the North), kamangeg flour and kamangeg-based food products, a gluten-free root crop indigenous to the mountains of Luzon, engineered bamboo novelty items, seaweed-enriched kroepeck, pickled native chicken egg, and tomato and mango-based products such as ToMango Juice, ToMango Ketchup, mango sinigang mix with kamangeg, mango-choco powder mix, and mango-pineapple jam of the MMSU; balikutsa and vinegar made from sugarcane, and smoked milkfish from ISPSC; locally-grown coffee, tea made from string beans leaves and ternate flower, paste made from swan mussel, and cookies from NLPSC; ceramic products and paintings of UNP; mulberry silk and silk products such as yarns, fabrics, shawls, and novelty products of DMMMSU.

Products of MMSU-assisted beneficiaries and technology adopters are also available such as the rice coffee and line products of SCUFYND, chichacorn and chips of Lucky Theo’s Food Products, roasted peanut of Dupitac Arbs Multipurpose Cooperative, and garlic products from farms of the province. 

The SUC Fair adds meaning to SUC – Sustained Excellence, Unified Efforts, Competitive Standards – that reflect that emergence of SUCs as prime movers of innovation and resilience.

For years, Region 1 has been actively participating in exhibits and trade fairs of CHED. In the SUC Fair 2020 held in Trinoma, Ayala Malls highlighting innovation, passion, and connection, MMSU’s pickled native chicken egg as adjudged the Best in Ulam for its innovative concept.

The SUC Fair 2022 is being held in celebration of the 28th anniversary of CHED and the 2nd National Higher Education Day. This is conducted by seven (7) SUCs in the National Capital Region such as Eulogio ”Amang” Rodriquez Institute of Science and Technology (EARIST), Marikina Polytechnic College (MPC), Philippine State College of Aeronautics (PhilSCA), Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), Rizal Technological University (RTU), and Technological University of the Philippines (TUP) with the Philippine Normal University (PNU) as the lead institution.
