To uplift local white onion growers, the Municipality of Pasuquin partnered with Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) and the Jollibee Group Foundation (JGF) in conducting a Pre-Dispersal Training on White Onion Production at the Municipal Hall Building, November 12.
The event gathered farmer beneficiaries from San Juan Icas Manuel Farmers’ Association, the white onion project’s designated host organization. The training focused on equipping them with enhanced knowledge on white onion production technology, good agricultural practices (GAP), and proper farm recording, which are key skills needed for sustainable and profitable farming.
Since the project’s inception in 2023, farmers’ participation has doubled from 15 to 30 beneficiaries, with a collective production target of 200 tons of white onion for 2025. The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG) continues to provide essential inputs such as seeds and planting materials, complementing MMSU’s technical support and capacity development initiatives.
Pasuquin mayor Robert Aguinaldo expressed appreciation for the collaborative effort, emphasizing the shared responsibility in agricultural advancement through shared resources and technical expertise that empower farmers and strengthen the white onion industry in Ilocos Norte.
“I’m grateful to MMSU and the Jollibee Group Foundation for the support given to the San Juan Icas Manuel Farmers’ Association. This project keeps moving forward because of our teamwork and cooperation. My office is always open to accommodate you,” Mayor Aguinaldo said.
Meanwhile, farmer-beneficiary Ms. Fe Llapitan also expressed her appreciation for the project’s positive impact on their livelihood, adding that the project greatly helped them make a difference in their lives.
Prior to this activity, a capacity-building training under the Agro-Enterprise Clustering Approach (AECA) was conducted on October 13 in Barangay San Juan, Pasuquin. This activity forms part of the ongoing multi-year initiative to strengthen white onion production and cluster-based marketing in Ilocos Norte.
The AECA project aims to capacitate local farmers to become sustainable and profitable agro-enterprises capable of supplying institutional markets.
As farmers continue to enhance their skills, partner agencies like MMSU remain unified in the vision of transforming Ilocos Norte into a vital hub for sustainable white onion production.
