Bamboo for envi rehab, launched in Bangui

Written by Administrator on 28 December 2021

Some 380 bamboo propagules are expected to be planted in Bangui, Ilocos Norte as part of the University’s aim of disseminating information on the benefits and of bamboo propagation to combat climate change.

The training on Bamboo Propagation cum Planting was held yesterday, December 28, with the Local Government Unit of Bangui through the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) in cooperation with the MMSU Institute of Environmental Governance (IEG)- Tanggol Kalikasan Inc.

Some 50 farmers and fishers from the communities along the Banban and Baruyen Rivers actively participated in the training held in Brgy. Taguiporo. Some drug surrender-reformists of the town also participated in the activity to help safeguard the environment and preserve the bamboo plantations in the area.

Dr. Charlie Batin and Mr. Charlie Maine Cacactin of the College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development (CAFSD) – Forestry Department served as resource speakers of the trainings, sharing relevant information along the bamboo industry, opportunities in bamboo production, and the production technology promoted by the University.

This activity is an output of the Webinar Series on Environmental Governance conducted by MMSU-IEG and Tanggol Kalikasan where LGU Bangui was one of the participants. After the training, a bamboo planting activity was conducted where 380 propagules are expected to be planted in support to the program.

More environment projects for implementation

The series of environment activities implemented by the Environmental Science Department of the CAFSD is part of the Area Specific Action Plan (ASAP) activity, a technical assistance grant by the Tanggol Kalikasan Inc. in joint management scheme with the MMSU IEG that supports the implementation of priority green projects of participating coastal LGUs.

Ten (10) LGUs of the province supports the ASAP project. Participating LGUs include Badoc, Pinili, Currimao, Paoay, Laoag City, Bacarra, Pasuquin, Burgos, Bangui, and Pagudpud. Most projects are mangrove rehabilitation and riverbank rehabilitation, and the town of Pagudpud for pawikan hatchery. LGU Bangui identified the rehabilitation and recovery of bamboo area along Banban and Baruyen River in Bangui.

The Area Specific Action Plan project seeks to improve local capacities; incentivize communities and local government units (LGUs); leverage financing support; and deepens knowledge, attitudes and behaviours for the effective management, regulation and enforcement of natural coastal resources in relation to other appropriate land and resource uses in biologically significant areas in Ilocos Norte.

This project is part of the Environmental Justice Sector Reform in the Philippines Project (ESJRP) funded by US Department of State – Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) and US Department of Interior – International Technical Assistance Program (US DOI ITAP).

Tanggol Kalikasan, Inc. is a partner of MMSU in empowering communities for safeguarding nature. It is a non-profit organization for environment conservation and protection.  In 2020, the University forged a Memorandum of Understanding with Tanggol Kalikasan President, Ramon Grimaldo, establishing the MMSU-Institute of Environmental Governance (IEG), thereby making MMSU as one of the 26 centers of Tanggol Kalikasan in the country. The IEG program is a strategic response to the ever-increasing demand for capability building of LGUs.
