Corn growers appreciate corn field day
Written by Administrator on 23 February 2022
Three (3) months after their successful training on glutinous corn production, Sarrat farmers appreciate the corn technology in a Field Day this February 22.
Forty (40) farmers and women from seven (7) barangays of Sarrat joined the field visit in the Brgy. 23, San Andres. The participants are graduates of the recently concluded School-on-the-Air (SOA) Program, Tarabay iti Pagtaengan, Pagbiagan, Salun-at (TIPPS) ken Dadduma Pay.
“We thank the MMSU for the technology and material support they shared to the farmers of Brgy. Binaratan because with these, we hope for a profit that will help us all”, Mr. Remigio Edrada, President of Zanjera Manayon Irrigators’ Association, shared during a visit for the virtual Parambak of the University.
The pandemic challenged the agriculture sector of the province especially with the rising cost of production inputs. The field day was implemented through the program, Galing-PCAARRD Kontra Covid-19 Program: Bio-Intensive Gardening (BIG) Panlaban sa Covid-19 Para sa Ilocos adopting the corn dispersal scheme of the Extension Directorate.
“Let us make this field day an eye opener to all to embrace improved farming technologies and collectively mitigate the effects of climate change. Let us try to diversify our crops and plant other high value crops”, Sarrat Mayor, Hon. Remigio Medrano, shared in his message.
Last November, twenty-seven (27) farmers from various barangays of Sarrat were trained on glutinous corn production. Interested farmers from barangays Ngabangab and San Juan, Pasuquin and Brgy. Lydia, Marcos were also trained on glutinous corn production.
The MMSU Glutinous Corn 1 is an open-pollinated glutinous corn variety developed by MMSU. For a hectare, a farmer can harvest around 5.61 tons and can already be harvested at 60-70 days from planting for green corn and around 90-100 days for grain or seeds. This variety is highly recommended for chichacorn production, a highly profitable livelihood venture especially with the gradual opening of businesses and tourism in the province.
