Growing off-season tomatoes is truly challenging, but at the same time, deeply fulfilling. Despite the heavy rains that recently hit the province and other areas in the country, our project partners have successfully started harvesting tomatoes—specifically the MMSU off-season tomato variety. As our partners describe them, these tomatoes are remarkably resilient and can thrive even in harsh weather conditions.

To recall, the Extension and Research Directorates partnered with the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN) and local government units (LGUs) across Ilocos Norte, covering 17 farmer organizations. Five of these organizations have already begun harvesting. In addition to providing technical assistance, the University also helps farmers market their produce. This particular batch of off-season tomatoes comes from the harvest of Mr. Marc Palacay of San Juan ICAS Maumel Farmers Association of Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte. (Mercy R. Gaño)
