Extension-ULS for Organic Farming in Vintar, Ilocos Norte

Written by Administrator on 04 December 2017

The University Library System (ULS)- American Corner in close collaboration with the Extension Directorate conducted a one-day training on Sustaining Soil Quality, Crop Yield, and Health Safety Through Organic Fertilizer Production and Use in Brgy. Parut, Vintar, Ilocos Norte last November 21, 2017. Brgy officials, 4Ps beneficiaries, women, and farmers graced the event totaling to 76 participants.

As part of ULS’ commitment to educate people, the American Corner continues to impart knowledge to climate vulnerable areas in Ilocos Norte. America being a partner in providing quality materials for reading and research, the MMSU-ULS team headed by Dr. Lucena Felipe and the Extension Directorate shared knowledge in organic farming to include the preparation of organic fertilizer and vermicomposting through Dr. Floramante Pastor, a professor at the College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development of the University.

Honorable Larisa Foronda, the Local Chief Executive of Vintar also graced the activity sharing the message that responding to safe food production is securing the health and wellness of their family as well as safeguarding the environment. With climate change as the biggest challenge needed to be addressed through information dissemination and spreading awareness, such conduct is a strategy to strengthen the campaign on resiliency over such adversity. Along with the many ordinances passed in the locality, active measures on educating the residents such as the conduct of skills training on organic farming is but another bucket of enhancement on making productive outcomes out of wastes.

A lecture from Dr. Pastor filled the morning of the activity and the afternoon dedicated for the demonstration of creating a vermicompost. A 2-kilograms of African Night Crawlers was also given to the demonstration site to serve as a head start to the residents. Cautions and tips during the demonstration were given by the lecturer, citing his experiences in managing vermicomposts.

“Agyamankami iti immayyo inted a pagsayaatan ta nakasursurokami iti ado. Ket sapay la kuma ta maipaganetget kadatayo ta tay kunatayon, agbabalbaliw ti klimatayo… Iso a padak a bumaranggay, agkakaduatayo kuma a mangipaganetget dagitay a programa ti MMSU”, said Kagawad Garry Castillo during the closing program of the activity.

Truly, a bunch of effort to reach communities echoes a million tons of grateful hearts and willing hands working for a common goal. #Kim Miguel
