MMSU Partners with INAC on STCBF Project

Written by Administrator on 02 July 2018

As part of MMSU’s continuing drive to help communities sustain crop productivity in climate vulnerable areas in Ilocos Norte, an information campaign cum training on the utilization and adoption of climate-resilient technologies was conducted on June 29 at the Ilocos Norte Agricultural College (INAC), Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte.  The activity was participated in by 280 partner-beneficiaries composed of parents and students of INAC enrolled in the agriculture track.

This activity is one of a kind”, said Dr. Aris Reynold V. Cajigal, Director for Extension and one of the team members of the project, Sustaining Crop Productivity in Climate Vulnerable Areas in Ilocos Norte through Science and Technology Community-Based Farm (STCBF) Project on Climate Resilient Technologies, in his message This is so since, according to him, all partner-beneficiaries are communities assisted by the Local Government Units (LGUs) of Ilocos Norte except for INAC, hence, as an educational institution, it shall be a productive demonstration area for the whole community. The project is implemented with funding support from the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture Aquatic Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) in partnership with ILAARRDEC, Ilocos Norte LGUs, Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN), DA, PhilRice, Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) and other research and development agencies.

In the message of INAC Principal, Mr. Almer Anatilio B. Ratuita, he said that the school partnered with MMSU with the ultimate aim of helping the parents and students of INAC improve their knowledge and skills particularly on the utilization and adoption of improved farming practices to increase farm production. Hence, as part of their initiative to strengthen their tie-up with the students’ parents, an election of officers to assist in the implementation of the different activities to be conducted in the project was organized. He added that the activity is just the start of a partnership between and among the agencies involved, hence, he encouraged the parents to help INAC in this initiative in view of the students who will be learning much from it.

The activity was highlighted by the presentation of the project including the different technology interventions followed in the project.  This was presented by Dr. Dionisio S. Bucao, Project leader of the STCBF Project.  The production technology for rice was presented by Dr. Sosima R. Demandante of MMSU-CAFSD and one of the team members.  As a ready reference to all the production technologies presented by the speakers, IEC materials were also distributed to help the participants grasp the technologies easier. Written in the vernacular, the IEC materials cater not only to the students but also the parents with limited learning access.

A site validation was conducted after the activity.  A MOA will also be signed for this purpose.
