Ilocos Norte LGUs approves support to STCBF project

Written by Administrator on 03 August 2018

Realizing the importance and benefit of utilizing and adopting climate-resilient technologies to help improve farm produce of community farmers, Local Government Units thru its Sangguniang Bayan Committee on Agriculture authored municipal resolutions to support to the full adoption and utilization of the Science and Technology Community-Based Farm (STCBF) project in various municipalities of Ilocos Norte.  These include Solsona, Marcos, Piddig, Vintar, Burgos, and Pasuquin, and the City of Batac, Ilocos Norte.  To date, two has already approved while others are still in its reading stage.

Farmer organizations from said partner-LGUs are the beneficiaries of the DOST-PCAARRD project on Sustaining Crop Productivity in Climate Vulnerable Areas in Ilocos Norte through STCBF on Climate Resilient Technologies implemented by MMSU. The project aims to increase the knowledge and skills of the farmer-partners on the utilization of drought- and flood-resilient technologies to sustain crop productivity in climate-vulnerable areas in Ilocos Norte through STCBF on climate-resilient interventions.

Among the interventions promoted in the project are the use improved seedstocks, use of Bio-N as seed inoculant, organic fertilizer, use of Carrageenan plant growth regulator (CPGR) as foliar fertilizer for rice, and the use of trichogramma to control corn borers. These technologies are being promoted to build resilient farmers on top of the aim of lowering production costs without compromising high crop yield.

These technologies are shared to farmer-partners through trainings and information caravans to update their knowledge on science and technology-based farming. Through these activities, more and more are informed on the challenges in the agriculture sector especially with the inevitable effects of climate change. IEC materials are also continuously distributed to serve as information and reading materials on the various technologies promoted.

Through sustained partnership with the different municipalities in the province, it is hoped that these science and technology community-based farms established through the different farmer organizations will be active demonstration areas of the different technologies to other farmers in the province. With MOAs and municipal resolutions supporting the full adoption utilization of these technologies in the province, a more resilient Ilocandia and more informed Ilokanoes will be achieved.
