Written by Administrator on 18 January 2021
In support to the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act of the national government, particularly the Plant, Plant, Plant Program, the Mariano Marcos State University is set to develop a massive moringa seedling production project in the eight-hectare reserve area in Sitio Lubbot, Brgy. San Pedro, City of Batac.
This moringa seedling production project aims to explore the potential commercial use of moringa, to enhance its economic value, to provide additional income to Ilokano farmers, and to sustain a food secure Ilocos Norte.
This project will be collaboratively conducted with the DA-Regional Field Office 1 (DA-RFO-1) and the City of Batac with grant amounting to Php 4 million. The project was awarded after the DA’s distribution of cash and food subsidy to Ilokano farmers and fishers at the University Covered Court last January 15.
From this 8-hectare farm, a five-hectare area will be prepared to be the plantation area while the remaining three-hectare will be used for service-related area such as internal road network, drying and milling area, composting facility, clonal garden, and irrigation facilities. Area allowances will also be made for natural hedges, live fencing as buffers for boundaries, and fodder trees planting to isolate the area from nearby cultivations.
Being a farm demonstration area of the Extension Directorate, the Lubbot area has been planted with various crops to include glutinous corn, ginger, sweet potato, cassava, including bamboo and fruit-bearing trees.
This development project shall mean the upgrading of the area proper, and boosting its productivity with the different lined development components.
