Written by Administrator on 10 November 2023

As part of MMSU’s effort to provide community members the opportunity to augment their farm income, the MMSU-Extension Directorate conducted a one-day pre-dispersal training on Glutinous Corn Production at the ILAARRDEC-One-Stop-Information-Shop (OSIS), on November 8, 2023.

The activity is part of the project on Enhancing Crop Productivity through the Establishment of a Year-round Rice and Rice-based Demonstration Farms among LGUs in Ilocos Norte.  The training was conducted just in time with the harvesting of rice.  Fifteen farmers from Vintar, Pasuquin, and Badoc, Ilocos Norte attended the dispersal training.  With partner-LGU’s directly assisting and monitoring the farmers, Agricultural Technicians of the participating LGUs assisted the farmers who attended the activity.

Assistant Professor Raymond Rahon, a faculty expert from the College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development (CAFSD) served as speaker on the cultural management practices of glutinous corn. Farm Record keeping including issues and concerns encountered by the farmers during the wet season rice cropping season were also discussed.

Farm-inputs needed in glutinous corn production were dispersed after the lecture. These include corn seeds and fertilizer, both organic and inorganic.

MMSU Glut 1 is one of the technologies promoted by the University for several years now.  The variety is recommended by experts for cornick processing.  This is an improved variety produced by MMSU and is now planted by farmers in Ilocos Norte.  In addition, the MMSU Glut 1 is a registered variety at the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC).-With reports from GCheska Clemente.
