To boost local livelihoods and environmental sustainability, Barangay Aglipay in Pinili, Ilocos Norte is positioning itself to become a center for bamboo production and processing.

“Nagmulakami ti nayon a kawayan para diay Bambusetum Project-tayo near the bridge. Gapo ta adda iti grupomi ni Mr. Reynaldo Antalan, Magsasaka Siyentista iti lugarmi, kalikagom ti barangay nga agbalin ti Barangay Aglipay a sentro ti bamboo production and processing. Isu a kalpasan ti trainingmi iti Bamboo Production manipud iti MMSU, intultuloymi ti panagpaadu iti kawayan tapno no addanton diay machine, ready kaminton nga agaramid kadagiti bamboo crafts. Adda ti nayon ken mataginayon a pagalaanmi ti i-processmi, isu a paaduenmi latta ti mulami a kawayan. Kayatmi a padakkelen ti nabuangay nga asosasionmi nga Aglipay Farms Bamboo Farmers Association. Kas mangidaulo iti Barangay, kalikagomko nga agbalin a source ti livelihood dagiti bumarangay,” shared Punong Barangay Aldreds Lucero Edmalin.

(“We planted additional bamboo for our Bambusetum Project near the bridge. Because our group includes Mr. Reynaldo Antalan, a Magsasaka Siyentista [Farmer Scientist] in our area, the community envisions Barangay Aglipay becoming a center for bamboo production and processing. That is why, following our training on Bamboo Production from MMSU, we continued propagating bamboo. This ensures that once the machinery arrives, we will be ready to craft bamboo products. We will have an expanded and sustainable supply of raw materials to process, which is why we continue to plant more bamboo. We want to grow our newly established organization, the Aglipay Farms Bamboo Farmers Association. As the barangay leader, it is my goal for this to become a source of livelihood for our community members,” Punong Barangay Edmalin.)

This initiative builds on the capacity-building support provided a year ago by the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), through its Extension Directorate and the College of Agriculture, Food and Sustainable Development (CAFSD), alongside the Ilocos Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (ILAARRDEC), with the support of LGU Pinili through its Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO). Together, they trained 46 community members of Brgy. Aglipay in bamboo propagation, nursery establishment, and plantation management to ensure a steady supply of raw materials for local enterprises while contributing to ecological restoration and climate resilience.

To expand their bamboo areas, the community conducted a planting activity as part of their “August Best” initiative, which brought together appointed and elected barangay officials, personnel from the PNP and BFP, and local bamboo farmers. The barangay also planted additional bamboo stock in observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADAIT), demonstrating a strong commitment to both environmental protection and community development.
